Expatriate Book Club

This book gets into some detail over the history and struggle for survival in Greenland and Iceland. I've always been fascinated by the North Atlantic. Just today I caught this great collection of photos from the Faeroe Islands.

, lots of fascinating anecdotal stuff about the Colonial Era and the origins of the English language, with a focus on American colloquialisms.

A good yacht, the wind at your back. untamed wilderness scattered among a few clusters of pristine forests, exposed rock and archipelagos. That about sums up my Utopian vision. I was born in mid-coast Maine, grew up across the street from the Maine State Prison in Thomaston.

I think there's a reason Americans, and the British of course, have romanticized these historical periods.

Not that I personally think murdering and robbing people at sea under any flag is good way to make a living.

But the World was a big place. You and your families, if you had any inclination towards a sea faring lifestyle, could afford to travel vast distances. If you could hold a gun straight or use a blade there was even a chance you could beat back the more tyrannical members of the "Moneyed Class" who would, from time to time, sell you into bondage or murder you and your entire family for sport.

Incredibly there were many then, and there are probably more today. People who have achieved some sort of freedom on this twisted rock.

At the end of the day, I think I'd prefer Nova Scotia. Visited there a few times over the years. Although the Faeroes have caught my attention for now.

cheers.

Post Script: Maybe I should have been an oceanographer...
